Blog 08 Meals@home

Being in Singapore for several months, but I seldom contact with locals. I didn't take part in "given" nor "host-familiy programme, for fear that I can not get along well with them. But lasty, I really foulu MOE; all Sm students who don't take the above programmes must join "meals@home".
It seems that every government knows exactly how to cope with people who share different ideas with them. But it worth my time more or less after the first night of this"meals@home".
It was about 7;14 when I was going to take a bath after my jogging(well, I'd seen some astonishing things when jogging). And suddently someone called in, I was informed to get into the bus outside right now and --hurry!! Well, it was not a good feeling to attend a formal activity with sweat all over.
At last, we arrived. They had waited for us out the flat. A little bit of nervous as I was, I followed them in. Finally, I found my teamnumbers but where our host was??
An half hour later, he appeared with a beautifui girl. We made a short self-introduction to each other. Then it was funny game time, yeah , really funny. I can't remember its name, but i was a squirrel in this game.
The dinner was not as good as what others had said, however it was much better than the famous"Eton Hall" food. After getting everyone's contact number,we said good bye to each other, hoping for next time's meeting!

Trifles about Debate

There is a widespread belief that action speaks louder than words, but not always. In some cases, action can be easily to be ignored, while relatively we are obliged to make our voiced heard and get our idea across. In other cases, there are questions like “To be, or not to be?” that cannot simply answered by yes or no. Under these circumstances, what shall we do to pass a judgment?
Debate!

As is stated in our supplementary materials, debate is a kind of art. This art not just requires a silver tongue or a golden mouth, but also based on a sharp point of view, a quick mind and critical thinking. It is a war of tongues and words. It is a conflict of ideas and thoughts.

These descriptions remind me of the famous debaters in ancient China, such as Zhu Geliang, Ji Xiaolan. Zhu Geliang . the most well-known military counselor of Shu in the era of SanGuo, once went to Wu all by himself to persuade the king of Wu, who used to be peaceful and unwilling g to be involved in the war, to unite together in order to resist the force of Caocao. Of course, he succeeded and the story passed down and down known as “Zhu Geliang one silver tongue win one thousand intellectuals”. The anecdotes of Ji Xiaolan in Qing Dynasty are also celebrated, especially after the TV dramas “Silver-tongued, Golden-mouthed Ji Xiaolan”. He saved his life and got free of punishment for many times in front of the empire by his tricky and clever games of words.

However, sometimes when the war of tongue is too severe or the fighters do not pay enough attention to his behavior, the debate might be no longer a debate as graceful as it should be, but become a rude quarrel. This case can happen when the debate is not properly organized, the atmosphere is not well dominated or most probably, the debaters lack the quality of being a standard debater. The vital rule for a debater to observe is to respect the opponents. The same goes for an athlete, or even an ordinary person living a normal life.
As an old saying goes, tongue is the most powerful weapon. It kills without blood. It murders without a knife.

Most intriguingly, a professional debater can argue for the position even though he himself totally disagrees with the opinion. But still he can make the opponents speechless and tongue-tied. Despite the results of the competition, there is usually no winner or loser in a debate. Even though the winner can sometimes manage to make his opponents out of words, it is still extremely difficult to make the opponents believe his opinion. It is the most pity and somehow goes against the ultimate goal of a debate.

Life is not a debate, your purpose is, and should never be merely to make your opponents speechless. A hero is great not by his power, but by his thought, the thought to influence. It is the behavior and kind action that can leave a mark in other’ mind and echo with delight.

The commodity price of Singapore

Living in Singapore with so little allowance, we have to pay close attention to the commodity price. When we first went to Vivo City for shopping, we checked the price of everything extremely carefully. The things that we would buy without any doubt when in China now put us into consideration because the price turns out to be shocking when multiplied by 5. The common things in our Chinese daily life become sumptuous if we dare to buy them.
It’s really horrible to live under such a life that everything is 5 times higher than before. I had been worrying what if the money had run out and the supermarket became a place where you wanted to go out immediately after you went in. However, finally I realized that the commodity price is just a reflection of the country’s consumption. Once you have lived in a country, you have to get used to its commodity price. So now I don’t care that much when shopping but keep a prudent habit.
China is a developing country and the people don’t earn much. As a result the commodity price is a bit lower than that of Singapore. If we think in an opposite way, isn’t it very nice when we go shopping in China after we get used to here? The Malays sometime hate the Singaporeans and called them birds just because the Singaporeans often go to Malaysia to shop and keep saying “cheap cheap cheap”.

Better or Worse

Several days later, the world famous EXPO will open its portal to people from all over the world. Despite scandals occurring one after another, people’s passion for it has never declined. Because we all want to unearth what new technologies would occur in the EXPO, and later embrace us in near future.
Without science and technology, we cannot imagine what our life would be like. Thinking a simple condition, what if our life has no electricity? Without the help of electricity, the whole world would be in silent. The very simple product of technology has already had such vital effect on human’s life, let alone some other modern technologies. Science and technology genuinely make a difference in our life. But we cannot ignore that they also bring abundant disasters to human history.
The rapid development of computer brings up various drawbacks of itself. Online gambling, pornography and more unhealthy things come into being. Many anecdotes cannot refrain themselves from curiosity and try to get access to them, which definitely have dreadful consequences on them. Recently statistics show that there are increasing figures of young people committing crime, and most of them admitting being influenced by the internet. The explosion of information not only lets every culture meets each other and erodes their identities, but also reveals every one of us in front of too much information, which deprives us too much time from reading classical works, thus lowering our reading comprehension level.
The development in science makes it possible for a country to destroy another country during a single day. The development in science put an end to so many species which have been the residents in this planet for millions of years. Our living environment is becoming worse and worse due to all kind of new chemicals being used. New diseases are coming forward day by day because of our condition is changed by fresh technologies.
Technology make us connected ,while it also make us feel we are becoming far from each other; technology make our life more easy, on the contrary technology make people feel more depressed; technology make our future more promising, in contrast we are more likely to stay away from it.
I strongly believe that technology is to make our life easier and happier, but the result turn to be not the same as our expectation. Where the reasons lie, we human should find it out, only which in way can we enjoy our life afterwards.

Enjoy Thai Food

How wise am I to have chosen Singapore! The food here is so nice that I haven’t found anything that I don’t like (except laksa). Frankly, I’m still full from today’s lunch even though I haven’t had dinner. Actually, this is the first time I had tasted Thai food and it impresses me a lot. So, thank you Mrs Yap! I even forgot to say after we finished our food. Sorry!
I really enjoyed the meal, although I didn’t know even one name of the dishes. I liked the soup best. The sourness spiced up my every taste bud. The meat in it was soft and tasty. It was all wonderful to me except for the strong taste of something like ginger. The pomelo with chili and onion was special, too. In china, we only have pomelo as a kind of fruit and not very often that we eat it. So I was a little surprised at first when it was served as a dish. Rice is common for Asian. But the way they cook and the ingredient they use may differ a lot from each other. In china, at least in the northern part, we never fry it with pineapple, let alone hold it in pineapple shells. It was a pity that I hadn’t taste the authentic one. But there would be an opportunity, I suppose, when I’m not so down and out.
Cuisine, to some extent, reflects culture and regional characters. It seems that the Thai love to put many kinds of spices in their dishes. It maybe because that they endow the tropical climate and there is varieties of flora. What’s more, they can proficiently make full use of every kind of ingredient in their cuisine, making it delicious and special.
I felt lucky when I heard that we were going to have Thai food last week; because I am going to Thailand this summer holiday with my roommate. Unfortunately, the situation there now is not so cheerful. Nearly every morning I can read the affairs about the revolt of the Red-shirt Army. However, today’s meal can be somewhat compensation if I really can’t go there in July.

Delicious Thai cuisine!

Mrs. Yap brought us to a Thai food restaurant, Suanthai , two days ago. It is located in Killiney Road, three-minute walks from the Somerste Station on red line. We left for Suanthai at 10 o’clock in the morning and arrived at 10:50, to find that it would only open until 12 o’clock at noon. Therefore, we wandered around to find a place with air conditioners to sit down and wait until noon. Unfortunately, we could found no such place at all; it seemed a little desolated around. Finally, we went back to the station where there are many shops, and walked here and there to kill time.

Then, at 11:40, we went back to Suanthai, sitting inside, listening to the beautiful music, chatting and waiting for Mrs. Yap. Just when we were taking a photo for souvenir, Mrs. Yap walked in. Our lunch began. In general, I think they are quite delicious, though some of us may be not accustomed to them. Thai pineapple fried rice mixed with Thai green curry with chicken, beef or prawns is really yummy! Since I found that all of us ate a lot of it, I think all of us love and enjoy it quite much. Another dish that surprised me is shaddock cooked with peanuts, both of which are my favorites. The first time I eat the shaddock was when I entered the Xi’an Jiaotong University in China, and I fell in love it at once. Though cooked, the dish keeps the original taste of shaddocks, which together with the peanuts make people drool. Others, such as fried chicken wrapped in leaves and grilled meat, are also quite appealing to me.

Because I cannot remember all names of the food, I can just introduce these to you. I sincerely recommend Suanthai to you, for it’s really good. Here is its website, and you can go if you want.

Incentive Counts

Offering star or flower shaped stickers is a prevailing method to motivate students, especially young children, to live up to expectations. Though much to adults’ bewilderment, it has been proved significantly effective.

I share their confusion, because after all, those stickers have nothing of practical use but the function of encouraging students. But amazingly, notwithstanding the same purpose, the stickers provide more stimulation than oral praise. In my opinion, the children’s inclination reflects humans’ innermost desire to be rewarded materially, so as to be convinced that they really have done a neat job.

Our research project leader seems cunningly conscious of this method. Whenever we hold a discussion about the project, he brings along some snacks or fruit. To my observation, we tend to be much more efficient and quick-minded with the promising prospect of some food. Apparently the reason is more than the hypothesis that the exercise of the mouth exercises the brain. Personally, the incentive brings a great deal of contentment and appreciation, so that my willingness of contributing more to our group work grows magnificently. I guess other group members feel much the same way.

Unfortunately, human beings are greedy creatures. As long as there is precedent, we expect the same or more of incentive. If our leader fails the anticipation, we become slack in our devotion to work, though not plainly perceptible. That reminds me of a famous experiment about three and four. A group of monkeys were offered three bananas in the morning and four bananas in the afternoon. A month later, they were offered four in the morning but three in the afternoon. The total number was the same, but monkeys showed serious resentment at this change. As is shown in the experiment, giving incentive is far from an easy job. It plays a role as drugs; if not well dealt with, it may become addictive and cause dissatisfaction or jealousy, in a working environment.

Incentive shares some traits with presents. Hardly anyone stays unmoved at small but pleasant surprise. We just love it, in whatever age and in whatever condition, especially when it’s related to appreciation or encouragement of the effort we take. So for employers, it would be a useful technique; but for employees, they’d better be aware and alert in order to get their fair reward. All in all, enjoy offering and receiving the incentive!

Thailand Buffet

Last weekend, our research group goes to eat a Thailand buffet. Actually, I have never eaten any Thailand food before, and I have never tried any buffet in Singapore. I think, the food is quite different with what I have ever tried, it is a little bit like Indian food in my mind, in fact, I just have eaten Indian food for several times. Some of the food I had is very delicious, while some of them I really can’t stand. Take the soup for example, it is the first dish we ate, it seemed nothing different with the soup we have ever had in china. But in fact, when I take the first taste, I was so shocked by how sorrow it is, I think it is the most sorrow soup that I have ever had. Maybe it is one of the particular features of Thailand food. But there are still some very delicious food, such as the chicken and the rice. I think what I had that day just a part of the Thailand food, and there must more different and delicious food in Thailand just like the Chinese food. I think the reason why I think it is quite different with Chinese food is that the seasonings they use are quite different, maybe seasonings that planted in the Thailand can’t be planted in Chinese because the weather or maybe the Thailand people just like these taste. I am not sure. But, I did quite enjoy the lunch very much, and I tried the Thailand food for the first time, it‘s quite unforgettable!
By the way, I wonder whether it is the last blog that I will write in the bridging course, if it is I think it is quite fast. Actually, I have been in Singapore for more than almost 5 month, time really flies.

Iceland’s Volcano

For a generation or more, no one ever gave a second thought to Iceland. Now it has shaken up the whole world. An Icelandic volcano is spewing ash into the sky making plenty of planes paralysed. A number of travelers are stuck thousands of kilometers from their homes. Business is grinding to a halt. The airline industry’s losses have surpassed $2 billion, which it will take years to recover from. Why does a volcano make the whole world come into messes. After thinking deeply for a long time, I figured out two points.
Firstly, globalization has made the world into a small village. It took several months to post a letter to a distant place in ancient time. However, emails ping from continent to continent in the blink of an eye nowadays. Money, trends and knowledge spread all over the world. Every small part counts a lot. We have to look at the world and the problems we meet in a pair of global eyes. It is very difficult to survive without considering other countries as a whole part.
Secondly, what happened struck the alarm clock. It reflects the “black swan” phenomena. Black swan is a financial phrase which means unexpected things may happen if there is no contingency plan. They are a warning about the fragility of the modern economy. Air travel is useful, but we should not just rely on it. What we can do is to foresee some unexpected things and to find out solutions to it.
Luckily, the ashes did not last too long. However, we can learn something from this accident and try to avoid the same problem later.

Puzzle

We have stuck in a dilemma: what to choose as our final major? As the day to submit our choice is coming soon, the main topic among group 8 becomes relevant to major selection. “What course will you choose, Elfin?” “Oh, I am puzzled now. Mechanical engineering and civil engineering both seem interesting, I cannot figure out which I prefer now. If I still can’t decide, I will go for common engineering.” The same feeling came to my mind after hearing these words.

I have been hesitated for a long time about ChE (chemical engineering) and Sts (statistics). My preliminary thought was choosing ChE, as chemistry is my favorite subject in senior high. However, after seeking for advice from seniors and parents, I perplexed. One of my seniors majoring in ChE indicated that ChE wasn’t as mystical as I thought. “You may find chemistry interesting in high school, right? I went for ChE also because I was fond of chemistry. But things weren’t as you considered. Many glossaries to memorize, many Singaporeans to compete with, it would be really tough especially for girls.” My parents were also grudging to my inclination of ChE, for that they thought the working condition might be arduous and bad for health. “Why not choose Sts? In Sts, you don’t need to strive hard to catch up with Singaporeans cause their mathematic foundation cannot match us. Besides, after graduation you can pursue a job in investment bank…”

Though they persuaded me to abandon ChE, I still want to continue entertaining myself with chemistry’s company. This belief was more confirmed after I heard George’s oral report last Wednesday. I couldn’t deny that I was impressed by his determination. In his report, he declared that however tough it would be, he would go for life science without regrets. I respected him for his persistence and what he said inspired me. I decide, after his report, to pursue what I really want, even no one stand by my side.

After a huge buffet

To tell you the truth, last week was really a terrible week. Because I got a warning letter from MOE, and it is a huge buffet to me, I think. I had never thought that it would be me who got the terrible marks and even worn by MOE at last.

I think a lot about myself after that huge buffet, I ask myself why this happened, and what I should do to avoid a second letter from MOE, and what changes I should make about my study and life. And what encourage me is that I find out all of those.

After a huge buffet, I realize that I spent so much time on computer before. Even though I never play computer games during my daily life, it doesn’t mean that it will be OK for me to open my computer. Actually, I watched so many movies and spent so much time on chatting every night before. The result was that I spared very little time on the homework of math and C programming.

After a huge buffet, I noticed that my timetable has some problems. I always slept very late and got up late. I never caught on the first bus in the morning before. And every night I studied in my room, sometimes I opened my computer because I said to myself that I had to do my essay or blog. But the true was that I spent two hours to finish several words’ work!

After a huge buffet, I feel really sad and disappointed. And I felt very sorry to my parents. It was them who received the letter and it would let them worry about me again.

But I learnt many things from this buffet, and I think it is also what MOE hope I can learn. Recall my study road, I never success very easily, it seems that through all my life, I must experience many different kinds of buffet before I reach what I wish to reach. At least after this buffet, I get the point that I should try my best to get into the real study road which belongs to me forever.

After a huge buffet, I understand the next time I will be the real one who am I. Study will never be a problem for me if I just try. And I think I will do it. I spend less time on the things that are not necessary, like the downloaded movies and QQ chatting. I step by step get used to another kind of living. I force myself getting up very early in the morning and have a morning running every day. So in order to be energetic in the classes the next day, I should to sleep half an hour earlier than before. In order to get away from the computer, I try to study in the canteen during the study time and the true is that my study efficiency improved.

After a huge buffet, I don’t feel I’m an also-ran. On the contrary, I feel much more comfortable than before after a deep thinking. Although this huge buffet gives me lots of affect, I think most of them are good for me. With so much pressure, I believe I will take the rest study carefully and seriously. And also maybe I can change this pressure into the energy to study well, and so I can get the courage to tell my parents on the phone that:

"After a huge buffet, it doesn’t leave the message that I’m fail, but that I will be the next winner."

A strange feast

Since I came to Singapore, I’ve tasted different kinds of food such as Indian cuisine, Muslim cuisine, Singaporean cuisine. But there isn’t any Thai cuisine in the canteen, so I’ve never tried that. But this Saturday, I had a chance. Mrs. Yap invited us mentees to a Thai food buffet. It was really a strange taste feast.

After arriving, Mrs. Yap took the menu and started to introduce some of Thai food. She told us that the biggest features of Thai food were hot and sour, and most of the food were cooked with spices. Then she ordered a series of characteristic Thai food. I was so anxious about the food because I didn’t have breakfast for this morning and I was very hungry.

The first food served was a bowl of soup which was translucent. I could see meat and some small green or white things in it, maybe those were special spices. Then I took the spoon and had a taste. Too sour! I even trembled after tasting such sour soup. Then I felt a strong taste which was like ginger. But I really didn’t like the taste of gingers. But the meat in the soup tasted very good. After drinking most of the liquid and eating up the meat, there were some soup and the green and white spices in the bowl. For not wasting, I swallowed the left soup without chewing. At last I finished the strange soup. Later I asked others their feelings about the soup, the two girls found it was quite delicious and Elian even wanted another bowl. But Edison and I thought it was just so-so. Maybe it was the difference between the boy’s and girl’s taste.

The food I liked most was the pineapple rice. It was all yellow and with some dried meat floss on the top. Mrs. Yap told us that the traditional pineapple rice was cooked in a pineapple shell and also served in the shell. But the rice they served us was on a plate. With the rice, they also served the green curry which was totally different from the Indian curry because it was cooked with coconut milk. So it tasted quite good and rich. I put some green curry on the pineapple rice, oh, so yummy! The scent of coconut milk mixed with pineapple was quite extraordinary. So I had a lot of rice and was soon full-no plenty room for other delicious food. T_T

We tasted 11 dishes of Thai food that day. Every dish had its own feature and tasted strange compared with Chinese food. But I really like it. It was a wonderful strange feast. At last, thanks a lot to Mrs. Yap for inviting us to have such a wonderful experience!

A Crazy World

In one world, people are dying to be thin, taking wieght-losing drugs to cause severe diarrhoea deliberately. In another world, all people are skinny because they have nothing to eat.

In one world, people keep a close eye on trends, constantly changing their clothes, shoes, bags, etc.for fear that they may be derided as being out.In another world, people even don't have a piece of cloth to cover their body.

In one world, many children feel weary of attending school, wrangling annoyingly to be taken to the amusement park or allowed to surf the Internet. In another world, few children has access to education. They are eager to gain knowledge and skill, but either their families are too poor to afford the fee or there doesn't exist any school at all.

In one world, people are complaining about everything non-stop:low salaries, soaring prices, ill welfare, high pressure...In another world, people seldom complain because they've got nothing to complain about.

It seems so crazy and unacceptable, doesn't it?How can the above two worlds which are exactly the opposite exist in "unison" in our planet?Maybe you will argue that contrasts always exist;they can never be eliminated.Yes,that's true just like black and white, tall and short that everything comes with its opposite. But at least we can take some action to help the destitute to be not that poor,at least to be equipped with daily necessities such as clothes and food to survive and facilities such as schools and hospitals to develop.

You may also question that we are not Bono or Anita Roddick who are famous, wealthy and influential enough to help the poor, what on earth can we do?In fact,a little change in our attitude is enough which can give rise to maybe unexpected results.Just be grateful to what we have already own and aware of the fact that there are many people around the world who are still living in poverty and suffering a lot.Keep this awareness in mind and then when opportunities come by such as when we become successful,we will naturally offer our help to them.

Although at present the world is not fair or balanced and even seems rather crazy,as long as more and more people can become aware of this and contribute to improving our world, somehow this situation can be turned around.

Life is a journey

A few days before, I saw a very hot article on internet, it is said: I have to go back to 1997, but I really don’t want to leave all of you. Many people make comment to this article; some of these are very interesting, such as: please give the answer of the college entrance exam to me. Please tell me the number of the lottery. Please tell the football fans don’t go to Korea on 2002. Also, some of them are very sad, please tell me study hard, don’t play or fight with others, otherwise I won’t buy a house for my mother now, and let her enjoy the old age life. Please ask me stay with her grandfather more, make her grandfather happy, and don’t leave him on 2000. 8.1. Let me can hear his word to me before he leave the world. Those comments are all about the regrets people had in their life, and they want to avoid it.
Life is a journey, every day is another day, is another world to you. It’s different to everyone, also it’s changed by yourself, maybe is will be influenced by a word, by an action, by a person you meet, and so many things, maybe some are very unforgettable, also can be a small one, even ignored by you. No one can know what life will be in the future, it just likes a secret, quiet mysterious, tomorrow can’t be control, future can’t be controlled, but in some way we can influence it, just like you work hard you may success, but if you don’t pay any effort, you must be failed. As it’s said, life is a journey, what we should do is to enjoy the scenery outside, even though there may be some awful weather during the journey, but just receive it, because it is a part of the journey, without which I think the journey is not a whole life.
If I had the chance to go back, my answer is that I won’t go back. Maybe I won’t have regret I used to have, but I don’t know whether there will be some new regrets? Life is a journey, it can’t be perfect, there must be some regrets, more or less. So, just go ahead, towards the future, leave as few regrets as you can.

Something I learned from ABC School Discussion
Last Thursday, we had a discussion about things in ABC school. We imagined we were all at a town hall debate, worked in pairs, and had a role play. Felix and I were the teachers of ABC school and we did well. Actually, everyone did a good job that afternoon. And I learned something from our discussion.
First, it’s impossible to make everyone agree. During the role play, we came up with several suggestions. But there wasn’t one suggestion that everyone could agree with. This happens everywhere in our life, from voting for president to deciding our research topics. I did a oral presentation about sheep mentality. People have sheep mentality, but there are always some people different. So a good leader’s job is to make most of fellows agree with him. Luckily, I am not a leader, neither in our group 8 nor in my research group. So I seldom have the difficult time to decide for many people. Most of us are just ordinary persons, so we only choose the most advantaged choice for ourselves.
Second, everyone has difficulties. As the material mentioned, “there was no staff room, and very little resources for the teachers to use”, and “the school premises were very bad.” These made both teachers and students suffer a lot. But the local business association also had difficulties. The main problem was lacking of money. Local business association asked teachers and parents to understand their difficulties, but everyone had difficulties. So it was really hard to make an agreement.
Finally, we must be clear what we want. Teachers as I was, I just wanted my money back. I didn’t want to join the local union. Sometimes when we want to do something, for example, C, there are always some people telling that if you do A, then you can get B, if you get B, you may get C. But we must know exactly what we want, and not be manipulated by others.

To All the Victims in Yushu County

April 14th, 2010, the disaster came down on China again. The big earthquake of 6.9 magnitudes hit Yushu county of Qinghai province in China, which was in a grim parallel to the 2008 Sichuan quake. We haven’t walked out of the sorrow of losing so many compatriots and relatives, the earth shook again just 2 years later.
The earth tremors have all but pulverized the town, leaving at least 1,200 dead and 9,000 injured. All single-storey buildings had been leveled. About 15,000 houses have collapsed, leaving survivors with the grim prospect of spending nights outside in freezing weather. All the communication tools broke down during the earthquake.
Sichuan schools issue haunts Yushu. 50 percent of schools buildings in Yushu had collapsed. At least 66 students were killed when buildings were toppled and there are hundreds of students still buried in the rubble. Parents have waited outside the ruins for several days and nights for their children with tears.
I got this news on Thursday. It rained cats and dogs here. Maybe the rain and thunder gods also had the same very grieving feelings with me. The wind was moaning through the trees just like a piece of sorrowful music, which beat my heart heavily.
However, what I saw was not people’s desperate eyes but thousands of rescue teams and survivors who are trying to save lives from the death. I saw our prime minster Wen Jiaobao standing on the accident scene encouraging and comforting the survivors. I saw victims’ strong and positive smiles. I saw the Chinese spirit flowing in every Chinese people’s heart. Although now I am not with you, my heart never gets separated from my motherland. I believe forever and ever China has the courage in the face of diversity as well as the confidence and ability to overcome any obstacles in front of us. In this country, we rise or fall as one nation, as one people from the past to now and it is also the same in the future.
Here give my best wishes to all the victims in the earthquake and my great mother-country.

When Researching...

Now students of SM3 are all engaged in doing research, so are we. As for our research, we have just finished our questionnaire, and now fortunately the questionnaire has passed~ (Y^_^Y~~)

By doing research, I find that we are quite weak at practical skills…I remember when we went for sightseeing accompanied by our befrienders, he at last led us to a vendor where sold pretty delicious chicken rice. During the meal, he said to us he had started doing a project on profits the Singapore Flyer made, so he must finish quickly to go on the project. And then the next time we met was one week later, he delightedly told us that the project had been finished…now every time when I call up it, I’d get so shocked. How indeed did they manage to succeed in such a short time?

Compared with them, we seems to have wasted too long time. Even only deciding the topic cost us maybe nearly two weeks… Furthermore as for the proposal, I guess we are the last in GP8 to finish it. Nevertheless, thank to our smooth cooperation we designed the questionnaire in a relatively short time compared with other research group. Despite of that, up till now around three weeks have passed. So you can see, what’s our real level…

When we advance in NUS, the competition will no doubt be very fierce, so how can we keep up with the local students since they obviously are much more experienced than us? Moreover, the writing of us rarely got scores over seventy, then how can we write a real essay…

Death

It is 3 am. All of my roommates are sleeping. The room is terrible quiet and the weak light of computer make the darkness more mysterious. I am lying in bed but don’t fall asleep. I’m not afraid of this situation, but just thinking about myself.
I have been here for about 4 months, but few things leave deep impressions on me. Everyday I waste a lot of time on playing computer games and pay no attention on other things. As a result, I learn nearly nothing. I get used to determining to study hard and then continue to play games, explaining to myself, “There is still a lot of time.” But now, I find that time is limited because of a word—death.
The first time I get to know the death was 14 years ago, when I was a 5-year old boy. I saw my mother staring at an old photograph without any words. Then from this photograph, I first saw my maternal grandfather, who had been dead before I was born. But at that time, I know little about death. I just thought that my maternal grandfather had goon to a distant place and would come back one day. However, with the time goes on, I know more about death and find that he will never come back. What’s more sad, my paternal grandfather died when I was 12 years old. I could still remember when I was young, he always put me on his thigh, fed me eggs which grandmother cooked for him, and then saw I playing games in the house. I used to think I could stay with him for a long time. But suddenly, I found death had taken him away. For the first time, I felt the death was not far away from us.
Yes, the death is not far away from us. So when it’s time to work hard, never say that “there is lots of time.” Because we never know the time when death would be upon us. The only thing we can do is just make most of our time and with no regret left.
I don’t know why I always would like to touch the gray area of life when I am lonely in the midnight. Maybe in my opinion, it is the situation which is nearest to death: dark, cold, lonely and helpless, just like you are falling through the ice, surrounded by gelid water, feeling the air is being consumed and your spirit is being taken away. It is really awful. However, I would like to remember this feeling, remember that I don’t have too much time to waste, and try to change myself.
Good night, everybody. Br ready for the your coming change.

Ahhhhhh!! MAYDAY!!!!!!!!!

Awesome! It was totally awesome!! The whole concert last night was a huge success!

Fantastic music, passionate Mayday, and frenetic fans! See, they merely wear simple T-shirts and jeans rather than exaggerated clothes; they don’t have to show giddy dances to attract audience, but jump high at appropriate moment. They heat the atmosphere to an extreme high merely with their passion and energetic music. Give them a microphone, two guitars, a keyboard, and drums, and they must hit you back the most fabulous performance! When they sang "LOVEing", I jumped and got rid of all troubles; when they sang "Suddenly I miss you very much", I thought of my friends far far away and burst into tears. They can enchant you with their magic music so easily.

I must mention the blue ocean! It’s a tradition for Mayday fans to wave blue glowstick. Last night, I finally appreciated the splendid blue ocean on the spot and became one little water molecule merging into it. We waved the blue glowsticks to the music without feeling exhausted as Mayday charged us with their magic music power. Words seem so weak and pale in front of such an amazing scene. It’s interesting that blue is a symbol of calmness but at that moment it still drove us crazy with Mayday.

Well, there’s still a little happy pity. How I wished to be among the main crowd at the central grandstand, with so many similar crazy fans! Sitting at the wing next to calm visitors is really not a wise decision. I must buy a good seat earlier next time. But I could understand those calm people. At least they approached here and didn’t spare warm applause, even though they didn’t scream with me. When Mayday asked the whole audience to joint hands, I still remember they felt quite uncomfortable and embarrassed to look at me. Two seconds later, I broke through my shyness. Beaming sincerely I encouraged them to follow. The fact is they accepted happily and murmured the song ZHI ZU along with us delightedly. I believe they must be keen to know Mayday more and suck power and joy from their music since then!

Dream a big dream even though we are so small. Why don’t you join us to savor every suck of the life with Mayday’ magic music?

My Opinions on Personality

Everyone thinks that success depends on the good personality personally, there are still other things influencing life, but personality is the most important part.
Different personalities may make different lives. If you are firm, strong, hopeful and have other positive personalities, no matter how poor you were, you could be very successful. If you are cowardly, weak, pessimistic and have some negative personalities, even though your family is very rich, you must be getting poorer and poorer day by day.
I was moved greatly by the following real story.
There was an eight-year-old boy sitting in a normal classroom. He was chicken-hearted and fragile. He always had a terrified face. His breathes suggested that he had just run for a long time. (In fact, he could never run!) Once he was asked to recite texts or answer the questions, his legs trembled without a stop. At last, he had to go back to the seat with classmates and the teacher’s laugh.
Nobody was interested in having a talk with him, but it made him stronger and stronger. He didn’t have any good friends, but it made him have more free time to think or to work. Although there was something that most people couldn’t stand, however, he had the personality that we could see on few human beings. He was staunch and unyielding. For him, enthusiasm for working hadn’t been reduced by others’ laugh. For him, the best way to overcome a lot of defects was making up his mind to work hard for the nation. For him, losing heart because of failure was the most stupid thing that couldn’t happen. Then he became the president of the USA and he was also the most popular one of all the presidents in America. His name is Theodore Roosevelt. Of course, his personality led to his great success.
We can learn a lot from the moving and meaningful story. After reading it, I know: To be successful isn’t as difficult as we think. Having a good personality is enough.

The Shawshank Redemption

To write this blog, I spare my time to watch it for a second time. Here I point out two main ideas that the movie taught me. One is value of life, and the other is hope.
The movie tells us the deep darkness of the prison and peoples’ obvious distain towards life. It was in 1949, until then Red had been there for 20 years, that Andy was thrown into Shawshank State Prison. On the first night, a lively life was deprived violently and cruelly with his name even known to nobody. That a precious life ended in such an upset way makes me doubt whether the life is worth value or not in prison. It makes think of those reports about constant abuse on prisoners in American prisons. How can this happen in a country which always wages incorporeal war on China about China’s human rights issues. Ridiculous! (I am not saying what Chinese government do is right, but American should solve their problems before persuading us.) Of course, they have the courage to disclose their evils to the world, which deserves Chinese praises and learning from.
Another young active man, Tommy Eilliams, went in prison for “B” and “E” which means breaking and entering in 1965. He was killed purposely only because he would like to prove one person’s innocence and let him exempt from his two-life sentence in prison. Is it excessive? I don’t think so, but the warden doesn’t agree with me. The warden, out of his own greed, tried all his best to prevent Andy going out, and for that sake, he murdered Tommy, who had just got his high school equivalency and had a bright future in front of him for his family, to destroy anything that may lead to Andy’s freedom. Is this excessive? Yes, too much, I think.
From the two examples we can see that life has no value to prisons. They can lose their life anywhere and any moment. Do you remember the famous sentence said twice to welcome newcomers, “Everybody’s innocent in here”? It may be a little exaggerated, but almost true. How can this happen? I need to think over it, and you, too, I suppose.
Perhaps I will continue to talk about the second idea, hope, but only if I am still willing to next time. Most of you must have watched it. For those who haven’t, I suggest you do watch it, and you will get a lot.

How many cartoons have you seen in your life?

Last week, we discussed about the evolution of the human being exhaustive and learnt many things. This week, when I decide to begin with my blog, suddenly I also hope to write something about evolution. And the first thing coming into my brain is cartoon. So I just want to share some cartoons which I have seen during my life with you.

Firstly, I want to state that most of the English names of the cartoons I write are from the translation of Google. So I don’t ensure the accuracy of them. Can you understand?

Recalling the past, it is no exaggeration to say that I’m growing up with cartoons and I have seen so many cartoons that I even can’t remember the amount I have seen. As my age increased, the kind of the cartoons I saw also changed. And it was just like a kind of evolution, changed step by step. But all of them left great impression to me, just like the evolution of human beings left a great impression to us today, it’s the same theory, at least I think so.

The first part of my life together with the cartoons was about six years ago, when I was still a little boy in primary school. During that time, I was much more unrestrained from study than any other time later. So I had enough time to enjoy every cartoon I liked. The cartoons which I remember very clearly are “Tie Dan trains Xia”, “Vigorous Sailor”, “The adventures of Tinting” and so on. “Tie Dan trains Xia” was a very old cartoon, but every child liked it at that time. It is a Japanese cartoon and the protagonists are two students Tetsuyuki and Minayo, one side is the Tie Dan Xia lead by “Dr No”, like children’s favorite Xia,”Hope No”, “Sun No” and so on. They drive the Japanese over their high-speed rail lines every day. However, there is another side, the Dark Legion led by the “Fast Devil No”. They tried a variety of methods to against the Tie Dan train Xia. But the Tie Dan train Xia always can win the darkness Corps with their brave, wit and also the help of those two students. Throughout each set, you always can feel excited and happy because of the humorous story and the real friendship. There were many cartoons at that time like this style, like “The Transformers”, “Saint Seiya”, “Pokemon” and so on. Another kind of cartoons is mainly about humor. One of them is “Vigorous Sailor”; in Chinese we call it “Da Li Shui Shou”. The sailor named Pipeye, who looks not so strong and even seem to be a little short. But he has a strange ability, every time he eats spinach his arms will suddenly becomes very strong, no one can be his competitor. Others like “The adventures of Tinting”; actually we call Tinting as Dingding in Chinese, “Haier Brothers”, “Yi Xiu Brother”, “Slam Dunk”, “Small gourd God”, “Mickey and Donald Duck” and so on.

After attending the middle school, the time I spent in cartoons was much less than before. So I began to watch the cartoons which had different only story in each set, like the “Sponge Baby”, “GG-Bond”, “Doraemon”. I liked “GG-Bond” very much; it also can be called “Pig Pig-Xia”. He is such a lovely pig that even his laziness and sleepy can be so lovely. He is not very powerful and clever; he only can use a Kung fu named “Dragon-10 hand”, which is not very powerful. But he always can be so positive and admire to life. Similar to GG-Bond, Sponge baby is also a lovely life; he is just a sponge but always can bring happiness to the lives around him. Others like “Tu Tu”, “Han Ba Gui”, “Cat and rat”, “Pokémon” and so on. They are all wonderful memory to me.

Then, as a senior middle school student, I was very busy in my study and had little spared to TV, not even to mention cartoons. But I used nearly every chance to do this interest thing of mine, so luckily I still had seen some very excited cartoons which gave me large impression. Like “Naruto”, “Detective Conan”, “InuYasha”, “One Piece”, “Cardcaptor Sakura”, “Bleach”, “Prince of tennis” and so on. These cartoons are also very excited and impression. But they are much more complicated than the cartoons I saw several years ago. Like the “Naruto”, it has a long story and still doesn’t come to an end. The plot is very tortuous but very attractive.

There are still so many things I hope to share. But I’d better not to do this. My life with cartoons just likes a kind of evolution; just exist the beginning, no ending. And after reading the long blog, how many cartoons have you seen?

Happy or Sad

This Monday morning, we made a small research with a partner on our personality. While the result was quite beyond our expectation because both Elain and I thought the other was always happy and seldom felt sad. On the contrary, we two considered ourselves being sad rather than happy!
This result left me in meditation. As far as I know there are so many people coming across this phenomenon in daily life, I included. We think ourselves as sensitive and moody, at most time we are in low spirits. But in our friends’ eyes we are happy and optimistic. This phenomenon is popular among all age groups, especially among us teenagers. But why this phenomenon comes into being, I think it depends on three reasons.
The fundamental reason to explain this phenomenon may be that people are not quite familiar with each other. The time we spend together is so limited that we cannot have a clear concept of each other. And in front of others we tend to present ourselves in a happy mood and belie our sadness. In this case we can just know our peers superficially. Thus we step into a situation that we misunderstand other people as always happy rather than sad.
The way we looking at others also contributes to this phenomenon. In modern world we all burden ourselves with so many responsibilities and concerns. Happiness seldom comes and meets us. We are bored with our life which is full of sorrows and sadness, so we want to find out more happiness from the fellow around us and ignore their sadness. That is to say we look for happiness from others and ignore their sorrow deliberately
The last reason in my opinion is people use smile to protect them. The society is developing at a high speed, which in turn leaving little time for us to build a strong relationship. We just know each other but have few chances to further our relationship. What makes matters worse is that life is not as smooth as we wish it to be, it always brings too many concerns to us. Sad as we are, we have no one to reveal our sorrow to and get comfort from. So in our daily life we pretend to be happy and never give out the information that we are sad. The smile has already become a mask to many modern people, under which lies their true emotion.
Maybe different people are affected differently by these three reasons, but at least many of us have this! I think we should analyze ourselves carefully and spare no efforts to find a good solution to it because whatever the reason is, this phenomenon has some negative effect to us when we look at it in a long term!

My grand grandmother--one of the last feet bound women of China

Last week, I promised Mrs. Yap to write a blog about foot-binding, and I think it’s necessary to keep my words.

When it comes to this unique corrupt custom of old China--- foot-binding, I must confess that I witnessed a genuine person who really had bound feet. That was my grand grandmother who passed away when I was 7 years old. Even though, I can recall many details when we got along well with each other despite we were separated by two generations.

In retrospect, I remember clearly that my amiable grand grandmother would do the two traditional and compulsory “homework” everyday of her life--- to bind her feet every morning by two strips of black cloth instead of wearing stockings and undo the task before went to bed at night. Every time she had to bind her feet tightly and the binding cloth matched her ancient black clothes well. After unfolding her multifold foot pack, I could see her usual wrinkled small feet that carried her hardly. As she washed the pieces of binding cloth and hung them up, I always asked her why she had a pair of strangely small feet and why my grandmother didn’t have. “Although we are both women, she just came across a good era that I missed” was the common answer I could get from her.

I was also told never to touch or play with the old possessions of my grand grandmother including that special cloth. As my grand grandmother passed away, all belongings went with her. Since then, I got to know that, all my family members including my grand grandmother just wanted to get rid of this old corrupt custom forever. When my grandmother was young, her parents would not let her to bind feet any more. One reason was that the new era came along with new conceptions. Another one was, this old custom was undeniably harmful for women.

Foot-binding, is a symbol of trammel and constriction on women. The original custom of foot-binding had roots in the opinions of emperors towards beauty. The exact beginning time is a problem discussed since decades ago and there is still no fixed answer. It is said that in Tang dynasty, a maid in an imperial palace who also had bound feet could dance on a three-cun golden lotus. Since then, the beauty of small feet spread among the people as a trend. In history, it was instinctive trait that women would sacrifice parts of their body to fit in the trend of beauty, so did old Chinese. For example, in 17th century, some Russian women chased for toe dance which showed another kind of beauty at cost of pain.

To sum up, this custom came from the pursuing of beauty. In old concepts, small feet made men feel pretty towards women thus influenced the gait of women in reverse. Women with bound feet walked sparingly and timidly were the right objectives for men to love tenderly. Hence, those women without bound feet would suffer discrimination and being spat. To be with small feet, women had to bind them. However, feet-binding was not simple---use a strip of cloth to pack foot up--- as it seemed. The beginning of foot-binding was an extreme suffering. The girls must bear the pain of crushing bones of feet to get a permanent shape. As a result, mothers, in the old time, reluctantly forced their daughters to bind feet just in order to help them marry a better husband even if the little girls cried and went off into a dead faint. At that time, foot-binding represented loyalty, filial piety, social responsibility and the sense of beauty.

Nowadays, women no longer bind feet at all. Instead, they follow the trend with toenails-varnished feet or high-heeled shoes. Actually, it’s another way to pursue the beautiful outward appearance by changing themselves. It’s obvious more healthy and human-oriented method to be modern, to attract others, to pursue perfection.

“Although we are both women, she just came across a good era that I missed”. Indeed, era never stop changing. I believe that my grand grandmother once was young and beautiful enough to attract my grand grandfather with her bound feet. Even though she changed her previous opinion towards what the beauty was and stop that old custom, we cannot be sure that the trend of beauty today in our sight is a perfect one that we must follow. Maybe decades later, when our grand grandson or grand granddaughter remembers us, they might be sorry about what we do today to pursue beauty and in sorrow about such a foot-binding story.

Hornet---The Love of Mothers

---If the golden, should cease to shine its light, just one smile from you, would make my whole world bright.
Last weekend I met a hornet when I studied. It was a small and common hornet which is no different from other hornets, but what it did touched my heart deeply.
It flied around me for several minutes. I didn’t want to hurt it. So I just waved my notebook and tried to frighten it away. My frightening worked. The hornet left. I smiled and continued to study.
“weng…weng…”
The vibrating sound of its wings echoed around my ears again just several minutes later. The hornet came back again. I felt so irritated that I made up my mind to teach it a lesson. I took up my book and hit on its head heavily. It was punched to the floor. It struggled and twisted. I thought it must give up this time. Then I turned to my books.
To my surprise, less than one minute later it returned the third time, but it was weaker now. It waved wings hardly as if it would use up all its energy. This time I did not do anything because I wanted to find out what made it so strong-minded. It flied a few circles and stopped at a small shell which is just under my chair. All the truth came out. I was shocked that there were two baby-hornets in the shell. That hornet is the mother of them and wanted to feed her children.
It was her children who made her risk life. She was willing to sacrifice her own life for her babies without any hesitations and misgivings. This is the love of mothers. This lets me think of the love of humans’ mothers. It is simple without any magnificant decorations, but it is the greatest love in the world. Mothers never speak too much, but what they do are more valuable than any words.
If the golden, should cease to shine its light, just one smile from you, would make my whole world bright.

Am I immature?

It is the thirteenth week of our intensive English course. The theme of this week is personality and values which interest us much.

Today we have done many trials to figure out our personalities according to Mr. Mehdi’s instruction. One trial was to interact with one partner about mutual personalities. When speaking of my characteristics, one word Tingting gave is carefree, which gave me a great shock. Now I still can recall her explanation clearly. “Because you are so young that you look as if you had nothing to worry about. Moreover, you are always cheerful……” After listening, I had no words to say. Does young mean carefree and immature?

Later on, Mehdi said that I was easy to read, because all my feelings were reflected on my face. No words to say for the second time. What he indicated is apparent that I was not mature enough to learn to hide my true feelings.

Tonight I previewed tomorrow’s lesson. There was an article about the connection between colors and personality. I chose violet as my favorite color before reading. According to the passage, “The person who prefers violet wants to find a mystical, magical relationship. Both mentally and physically immature, you are stuck in a dream world of wishful thinking and fantasy. Often violet is chosen by adolescents who still see the world through fairytale eyes.” Totally no word to say! However, ignoring those words such as “immature”, “adolescents”, I marveled at its accurate description. Indeed, I desire mystical encounter just like what is depicted in novels. Maybe many of you know that I am fond of TVXQ, but you may not know that I often fancy coming across them and imagine how to impress them……

Anyway, I am growing happily, and I am old enough to consider something from the vision of an adult. Please don’t put the bonnet “immature” on my head.

My Bloody Essay

I received an essay marked 37’ last Thursday!

It’s an essay about one aspect of peranakans’ culture, while my essay named “Concern about Peranakans’ Future” was commented that “You are asked to write ONE aspect of culture!!!” from Ms. Yap, who we had been looking forward for 3 weeks! At that very moment when the outrageous 37’ struck into my eyes, how I wish that Ms. Yap could come several weeks later and forget all about that bloody disaster.

If only I had obeyed the instructions of how to write an essay! If only I had observed the rules to come up with a fixed outline with a so-called thesis statement and several topic sentences. If only I had not gone with my thoughts. If only I had not deliberately ignore the limit.

There is no such a thing as a rein or boundary to my thoughts, which have the habit of popping out without invitation, and sometimes pretend to be dried up when I’m in desperate need of them. With no intention to bind my thoughts, I enjoy letting them flow out, flourish or explode in the way it is. Having no skills in playing musical instrument or painting, the only way for me to present my ideas is via language. Words can be the powerful, as is said in the movie Death Poets Society, “Words and ideas can change the world”. Whereas I strongly hate the way that an established method should be used to fix the article. Every time when I’m struggling with my essay, I feel as if there are heavy chains all over my body when I am making an effort to dance.

After this experience, it reinforced my belief that an essay is a professional killer that seeks pleasure from murdering the beauty of language itself. But even the laws claim the legalization of this “killer” and what stretches me to the limit is that the regulation and morality not only approve of but also advocate this kind of “crimes”! Unbelievable! Incredible!

However I resort to surrendering to the marks that judge the quality of an essay. What an essay focuses is not the beauty of language, but the clarity of expressing of ideas and the logic of thoughts.

I am convinced that I have broken the records of the lowest marks to the essays of Group 8. Sincerely, I wish that no one would break it again (an extremely hard job for my intelligent classmates, I think), of course myself included.

Reputation or Embarrassment

Today when I surf on the Internet, I find a piece of information which makes me very surprised.

The Times begins its annual activity choosing 100 the world’s most influential people all over the world. What makes me surprised is that Han han, a young Chinese writer, is in the list of candidates. What’s more, he gets the most votes among the Chinese candidates. Even the president of USA gets fewer votes than him. The explanation of the Times is that he is one of the best sellers in china and he arouses the debate about quality-oriented education.

Now his fans are calling on people to vote for him. To be honest, I have to admit that Han han is very popular in china. And he dares to criticize the officials. But what I want to ask is that when does Han han have a global influence? On the one hand, most of his fans are Chinese, so his international influence is very limited. On the other hand, the amount of the fans is not the largest in china.

Finally, I want to say the ballot constitution is not very proper. Because china has the largest population in the world. So Han han is very likely to appear in the final list.

In my opinion, the fans of Han han should be calm. Because now Han han doesn’t have global influences. Being chosen as one of the world’s most influential people can bring him nothing but embarrassment.

Do I Really Know Myself

This morning we had a little test:First choose 8 words out of a list of words offered;then let your partner choose 8 words to describe you in order to see what is your image in others' eyes.I think it is very interesting because I am always eager to know how others view me and it seems that I tend to care too much about other people's views on my image.Up to now, almost everyone I met for the first time would comment that I am very gentle and quiet, not like a girl studying science but a girl studying arts.So I wanted to check if everyone holds the same impression.

Compared with the words I chose,NiBei got 4 the same as mine which were careful, peaceful, thoughtful and optimistic. The other four words I chose were sensitive, benevolent, balanced and well-organised.I think I'm sensitive bacause I can always sense the subtle differences around me.For example I can tell if somebody is lying to me or not just by instinct.Another example is that changes in seasons or flowers or leaves can affect my mood.I will feel blue seeind petals falling down. While NiBei thinks that I am reliable, adventurous, active and ambitious which actually I felt happy to hear.

She thinks I am ambitious because I dreamed to be a diplomat.Yeah, that used to be my dream, yet in face with the cruel reality it seems that the dream is gradually dying away. But who knows, maybe it is just being hidden by the dust of the cruel reality, waiting for an inspiration to rekindle itself.Actually I do feel that I am less ambitious than before, becoming more so-called practical.I still appreciate Madame Curie's famous words:"We all need dreamers who are devoted only to the advancement of science, the advancement of human society, not caring about fame or money. "I used to wish to become that kind of dreamer, but then nearly all my friends keep questioning me:"Then how can you support yourself and your family in this fierce and practical world?"To tell the truth, till now I've no idea how to answer them.

Then I asked NiBei the thing I most wanted to know:"What was your first impression of me?""Gentle and quiet."She blurted out the answer without any hesitation. Again it was exactly the same answer as others==!Actually I don't think I am as gentle and quiet as I appear to be.When with my close friends,I think I am humourous, lively and I tend to laugh a lot.

In the past I believed that no one could know me better than myself. But now I begin to doubt whether I really know my personalities fully because so many people view me in exactly the same way.Maybe there doesn't exsit such thing in the world that one can fully understand himself or herself.

P.S:What was your first impression of me and what do you view me now?Eager to know...

Blessed Lives

What could be more precious than life? Two decades ago, we just trekked all the way from heaven down to the solid earth, which is filled with laughter, passion, adventure and miracles. Sunlight embracing, heart pumping, we have plenty of possibilities and a brand new blueprint to fulfill.

That’s why life is a prevailing theme that touches the most of people. When I was reading the report of 159 Chinese miners being rescued, I was moved to tears, even though I seldom shed tears in daily life. Moreover, this blessed feeling was rooted at the bottom of my heart, growing into a sunflower, which keeps reminding me of bright hope. The letter sent to the trapped miners read, “Dear fellow miners, the whole world is concerned about your safety… Hold on to the last.” Then they found the swaying light of a touch, apparently a sign of life. I was thrilled at these words. The thought of giving up hope of life never came into those miners’ minds, even though they witnessed some of their fellow workers’ dead bodies drifting in water, even though it was already the eighth day since the accident and has passed the best time of rescue, even though they were inflicted with pain, thirst and hunger, even though hope was rare.

Nothing could have supported them though eight dark and dreadful days except for yearn of life, which is so powerful that a lot of miracles were made to happen. Lately, especially the year of Beijing Olympic Games were held, several tragic events swept China. There were much heartbreaking news, yet more miracles inspired the whole nation. I dare say Chinese people are never short of spirits, never before, never after.

I tried to imagine the feeling when trapped miners were again bathed in the sun. It was hard to describe, but my eyes were filled with tears again. One thing is for sure, that each and every one of the miners, including those who were truly moved by the miracle, will be overwhelmed by the gratitude of being alive. No matter what difficulties we are faced with, the fact that we are alive is enough to serve as a reason to be glad and cheerful. Besides, we are also aware of the importance of living to the full, because no one knows when the blessed life comes to an end. But even when it does, we won’t regret, as the life we lived is meaningful and substantial enough.

The Cove---a shocking movie appealing for mercy!

Last time, I wrote a blog The Ugly Japanese which revealed some ugly aspects of Japanese. But after watching the movie The Cove, I realize what I wrote was not ugly enough at all. It’s a really true and proved fact that thousands of dolphins are being killed cruelly in Taiji of Japan. In some scenes, fishermen took a baby dolphin up and cut its throat pretending to help it fulfill its life. What’s more hatable is those engaged happily in capturing and slaughtering flippers never acknowledge the fact but scold and force tourists away who want to find some evidence in the cove. The fishermen get right in tourists faces and show the brutish facial expression. Many people are arrested for trying to free some captive dolphins. Some animal rights activists are even murdered over dolphin slave trade. Some nice-voice dolphins are sent to the ocean park around the world where the noisy pools do not fit dolphins at all, and those left are all killed and cut to sell meat.

We have some of the same physiological traits that whales, seals, and dolphins have. We’re all air-breathing mammals. They live in the water while we live on land. That’s all. But when we see the mind-boggling scene that the whole cove is filled with blood and horror scream, we cannot believe it is a fact that many dolphins are killed right now at some place in the world by our mankind’s hand. They’re doing it exactly like they did with large whales---slaughtering every one they can get. After the truth was exposed, some officials of Deputy of Fisheries for Japan were fired. The whole world realized it’s time to take actions to stop it. We can see there is still hope for dolphins’ future unless we all come and against those ugly Japanese! The main character in this documentary film claims that he must see this end in his lifetime. I also hope to see the end just in the near future. Still, the Taiji dolphin slaughter begins every September unless we stop it! At last, the film shows go to the following websites to support stopping it; yes, we can!

Human beings in the old days and now

As we study deeper about our ancients, we know more about the way they lived, which is totally different from the way we live today. Their lifestyle is tough and simple when compared with ours, but human beings nowadays don't seem as happy as the ancients.
The first thing our ancients have to worry when they get up is the food of today. Thus they spent most of their time on finding food and fighting with the animals they might meet when looking for food. When we sigh at the hard life they had and think that we are so fortunate to live in a society full of technology that makes our lives much easier, at least we don't worry about food as much as our ancients do. As we have more free time than them, we end up with many things else such as computer games, MSN, facebook, of course boredom and so on, so that many people today still find time limited.
However, even though they were so engaged in the basic needs of life, some of them still found time to do the art. The pictures on the wall, the dance at midnight, the new words to communicate, all these things that we get from the relics show what they did in their spare time. When thinking of my spare time, I finds that I am so lacking in imagination compared to the ancients. All I do when I have nothing to do are sleeping, movie watching. I can not think of something that is more than entertainment. Or maybe I haven't found what I'm really interested in thus don't know where to use my energy.
Human beings in old days still live and live through all those years, while human beings now live a different life with so many conveniences but still find it hard. However, in my point, human beings don't have to write the essays as I do, which may make their lives a bit easier than mine.

If...

"If I had 10 million dollars, I would buy a villa.
Do I have 10 million dollars?
No.
So I still haven’t got a villa.

If the fire of loving you couldn’t be put out even I poured all the water in the Pacific Ocean out.
Can I pour all the water in Pacific Ocean out?
No.
So I still don’t love you."
This is from a once-famous internet novel called the first intimate contact. A man and a woman got to know each other because of this stupid poem above. They then fell in love with each other but didn’t speak out. The ending is pathetic that the woman got a very serious disease and died. The most moving part was that the last moment before she had died, she wrote another paragraph:
“If the fire of loving you couldn’t be put out even I poured all the water in the bathtub out.
Can I pour all the water in a bathtub out?
Yes.
So, I love you.”
When I was at Edison’s age, a person who was very important to me recommended it to me. I still remember that I have caught a cold that day, but kept on reading it late in the night.
Now I feel regretted to have returned the book to him. After I burned all the dairies I wrote about him, the novel seems to be the only substantive memory about him. Of course, I have considered buying another one. But another one has no meaning to me.
He has been buried deeply in my mind until the phrase “seize the day” in the movie reminded me again. Before I decided to forget it, I thought about it not less than one hundred times that maybe if either of us seized the chance rather than waiting, we’d been in the same university and I wouldn’t even been here, Harbin or Singapore. Unfortunately, fairy tales didn’t come down upon me.
If...
Given a time capsule, I would travel to tens of millions of years ago to find out whether we descent from apes for terrestrial.
Given a time capsule, I would travel to feudal China to find out why women were forced to band their feet for Mrs Yap.
Given a time capsule, I would like to travel to last year to find out what life would be like if I seized the chance for myself…

O Research, My research!

Our group –Amy, Qin, George, Laura and I—has already been working on our research for more than three weeks. To be honest and say, we never lack enthusiasm. In fact, most of our time was spend on aboil debate. We all have different opinions and usually can’t easily get to an agreement because for most times we just can’t convince each other.
As far as I know, our group is the only one that worked out the questionnaire before our topic was decided. So you can see our enthusiasm from that. Luckily, we have five people in our group, so when we can’t agree with each other, we have to vote. We chose our topic as ‘Privacy on Social Media’ ultimately, because we were all bored with eternal nagging debate. Then we found that our thinking had been limited to our first questionnaire, we had to do it again and find some methods to measure people’s awareness which is very difficult for us. After hard brainstorm, some of us came up with some good ideas. George always has his own thinking style and sometimes his style helps a lot. He offered a method with several questions in a series. I also offered another way to measure our data which need people to rank the options. Then our group had a really ardent discussion which lasted for nearly two hours but we didn’t solve our problems. However, our debate did have some functions. At the end of that night, we knew what we lacked.
Yesterday, three of us went to Centre Library after class to search for information. We found some books useful and interesting. To my surprised, I found that there were pencil labels in many books I need. Sometimes it appeared exactly the chapters I wanted. So I thought there may be someone doing or had already done the same research.
I like to work in our group, though sometimes I feel upset when my opinions are objected. We are a team, which means one for all, not all for one. And I know clearly that a team won’t improve without discussion and debate.

The differences between the chopsticks used in China, Japan and Korea

A lot of people in East Asian use chopsticks as their tableware, for example, China, Japan and Korea. But if you look at these chopsticks carefully, you will find some differences between them.

Firstly, the material is different. Chopsticks from China or Japan are made of wood or willow whereas those in Korea are made of metal. The reason is the Koreans like to eat barbeque, if they use a wood pair, it would be burnt in the broiling grill. But metal chopsticks are a bit heavy, so Chinese and Japanese prefer the wood ones. On the other hand, many Japanese chopsticks are made of willow as Japanese think willow can exorcise evil spirits.

What’s more, the tips of the chopsticks are also distinct. The tips of Chinese chopsticks are flat while those of Japanese chopsticks are sharp. Japanese like to eat raw meat, especially sashimi which is so smooth that it is quite hard to pick up with chopsticks. So their chopsticks’ tips are sharp to stab the raw meat, like a harpoon. In contrast, Chinese seldom eat raw meat, so the tips are flat. There is a rule in China: if you cannot pick up food with chopsticks, you can even throw it away but never stab it. Because stabbed food are for the dead.

A further difference between the three is the length. Chopsticks in China and Korea are longer than those used in Japan. China and Korea continue the theories of Confucius that they regard unity as a virtue. So it is so common to see a Chinese family eat together and pick up food from the same plate. A long pair of chopsticks make it easily to pick up food that is on the other side of table and you can also pick up food for others to show your polite. On the contrary, Japanese always eat separately. Everyone has his own portion of food so there is no need to use a long pair of chopsticks.

The same feeling with you ! In China,we did a lot of practice as preparing for final exams but here, we just learn and don't be familiar with what to be tested and how we are going to be examed. So, some time later, we can handle more with these "awful" exams!

In another way, we comsumed electricity.Anyway,we can notice the importance of the very hour in that day.I really hope there being a Earth day when we can't use electricity all day and just play at "night",even it is not practical.

They are really alive in our mind.
