The Awful Checkpoint

I hate exams after rest, and it always happens in China. So during the rest, I usually spend most of the time on review. Even I can take some time going out or playing with my family, I can’t enjoy myself very much, because I always think of the exam that coming soon. This kind of situation happens to me again.
Last weekend, we had the first exam of math and c programming, which makes me very tired to prepare for it. All the students had to do well in this exam, at least get 70 points, otherwise, they will receive a warning letter, which means that you have to study hard in the following time. Also, it is said if a student receive a warning letter two times, he or she will be sent back to China, which is an absolutely awful thing. In order to void this kind of bad situation, all the students study very hard and try their best to be well prepared for it. Before the exam, some day I spent the whole day on typing different programming on the computer and even studied until midnight, just like the life that I used to experience in my grade 3 in senior high school. I thought I was prepared well before the exam, though there are still some lack, I had try my best. However, things didn’t happen toward the good ending that I wished. The math is quiet normal, and I think most of us can pass it. But the C programming exam is quiet unexpected, most of the questions was really confusing. Some of those words were really hard to understand, which means that I even didn’t make out the meaning of some questions, and I thought some of the questions were out of the range of what we had learned in the class. So the C programming exam was really hard, maybe it will a little hard to pass it. But all of those have passed; now we are facing the next challenge and what we should do now is forgetting those and moving towards next target.
Wish all of us can pass that exam!

Cast those Garments!

Last night, I was invited to City Harvest Church to enjoy a wonderful drama show. That’s fairly amazing! The composer of the show is so innovative that he or she sets the bible story in a modern background, which triggers an array of funny jokes and familiar dilemmas. Can you imgaine Jesus is utterly discredited merely by evil comments on facebook-like social media? Can you imagine those devils who flog Jesus wearing camouflage clothing? I was completely immersed into the fantastic performance and furthermore, it leads me to a deep reflection.

Put away the doubt when I saw that Jesus, murmuring “Your faith gets you healed”, covers Bartimaeus’ eyes, and the blind can see and takes off his special garment immediately. Later in the preach, pastor Kong Hee said Bartimaeus gets healed because he has faith and castes his garment. I agree with him.

How many of us wear a special garment when keeping pursuing in a frenetic pace or indulging in negative feelings?

Some people wear a garment of shame. A few are born disabled and they feel self-abased about the physical defect. A few acquire shameful harm from others and cannot walk out of the shadow. They are carrying heavy burden which actually doesn’t belong to them. As a common saying, “The miserable man must have his defect causes the misery.”If they keep grabing so-called shame which others don’t care, or sympathizes at most, they will have no chance to get rid of the misery.

Some people wear a garment of failure. They believe they’ll never succeed because they haven’t ever succeeded for once. They complain, complain and complain. The garment of failure is like a well-knit web wrapping them tightly and blocking the fresh air. Soon, they will surrender and abandon any effort. Then it seals a real doom to those wearing a garment of failure. If Edison surrendered after tens of thousands of failure, how can we enjoy bright light in dark now? Why didn’t he give up? The knack is that he absorbed lessons from failures and left them behind instead of putting them on.

So, don’t await others coming to save you out of the soup any longer. You are the very Messiah of yourself. Just cast away those heavy annoying garments and move forward to continue your life journey with a fresh body!

How to Write a Composition

I always don’t know how to write a composition. It is so difficult for me that I have no idea about it. Maybe someone would have the same problem, so I search some information on the Internet to introduce it.
First, you should choose your topic. In senior high school, I was often given the topic to write, so I always paid attention to the following stages about the composition and ignored how to choose topics. Now, when I have more chances to write “my” composition, I just find that I don’t know what to write. What a pity it is! Thus, if you want to write well, you should have topics. But you also have to learn how to choose. The good topic should be accurate, attractive and meaningful. You’d better not write something boring if you want to be a good writer.
After choosing the topic, you’d better write an outline, which would help you finish writing easier. You can arrange your sifted materials in the outline so that it has unity. The way to write an outline is known by you, so there is no need for me to repeat.
Then, you begin to write. With the help of the outline, you may find it is easy to write a composition, then, you can pay more attention on your writing skills. It is a good chance for someone to show his ability. But no matter whether you are good at writing, you should make your composition explicit and accurate; you also should show your own idea to help others understand. Sometimes, you can use some special words or punctuations to make an expected effect.
The last thing, which is often ignored, is revising. The spell errors are not the only thing you can do when you are revising. You can also change some words or sentences to make your composition colorful. What’s more, you can evaluate it with four standards: Organization, Substance, Style and Mechanics.
This is the way to write a composition, but “there is no single way to write an effective composition”. If you want to be a good writer, do it by your heart.

My Opinions On Keeping Diary in English

Keeping a diary in English is one of the effective ways to improve our English writing ability during bridging course. Compared with other forms of writing,it is shorter and takes less time. It can help us to cultivate the habit of thinking in English. If we persist in his practice, gradually we'll learn how to express ourselves with Singaporen in English.
In keeping a diary in English,we inevitably run up against a lot of difficulties. In the first place,it often happens that we have trouble finding appropriate words and phrases to give expression to our mind. Secondly, there are many idiomatic ways of saying things in Chinese, as we awlays do on SM English classes. And it is extremely hard for us to put them into English properly. Certainly, there are some other roadblocks we may come across in our keeping a diary in English.
As far as I'm concerned,my suggestion is that we should always have a note book and a Chinese-English dictionary within easy reach. Whenever something beats us,we can first put it down in our notebook and then consult our dictionary. We can also turn to our tutors for help,if necessary. In short,it is of great use to keep a diary in English for the development of our writing skills. Hope every Group 8 member can pick up this habit:)

My Attitude Towards Singlish

We, as MOE’s scholars, came to Singapore to pursue further study. What problems do we have to face? Custom differences? Cultural differences? Maybe we ignore the language problem. Many people think that we have learnt English for more than six years in china, so the communication won’t be a problem at all. I also thought that way when I was still in china. However, I have absolutely changed my idea now.

Though Singaporeans speak English, their English isn’t standard English but Singlish. They speak too fast for me to catch what they say. I still remember the dilemma I caught in when I went to MOE to submit one key document alone. I’ve just been to Singapore for several days at that time and I didn’t know the location of MOE. I had no alternative but to ask locals for help. I couldn’t deny that they were really warmhearted, but I totally couldn’t understand what they said. Before I could recognize several words, they have already stopped talking.

Excluding the fast speed, Singlish is a mix of English, Malay, Indian and Cantonese, though English is the leading rule. So far, I have been in trouble in this aspect. One day I went to Business Canteen for lunch; an idea suddenly occurred to me of trying a new flavour of food, so I chose the Mid-eastern food. When it was my turn, trouble came. I couldn’t figure out what the chef was saying. After asking “Pardon” for several times, he seemed to lose his temper, and I felt so embarrassed. When I was thinking of changing restaurants, god bless me, one of my befrienders came to my side and he helped me out of that awkward situation. Later I was told that the chef had mixed some Malay in his sentences, no wonder that I couldn’t understand!

You see, Singlish really brings trouble for me! However, if we view it in another side, we can also see its benefits. One of the most significant advantages is that it helps pick up some Malay words. For example, from my several embarrassing experiences, I knew “ makan” means “eat” in English, and “alamak” shows the speaker’s surprise. Another benefit is that Singlish, this innovative mixture, has enriched the global civilization. We should cherish it as a priceless treasure.

Singlish is unique and I really hope that it can be preserved as cultural heritage but better not be so widely spoken.
