How to be a good learner
First of all, you should create interest in learning. Interest is the best teacher. No one can ever learn very well if he is not interested in it. You will be energetic about what you like. Then you will pour all your energy and enthusiasm to study. Some people will say: I really have no interest in some subjects which are necessary to learn in school. So I can give you some advices which help you gradually get to like this subject. You should give yourself an indication that I can learn it well and try to find something interesting to you.
Secondly, making meticulous plans and stick to it. Many people just study. They spend all their time studying. In my opinion, to a certain extent making plans is as important as studying. Because plans are the guide and process of your study. You can put your ideas into order. By and by, you can do everything effectively.
Last but not the least, don’t stay up very late. As far as I know, most of the students sleep at about 12 o’clock. And they find it very hard to get up in the morning. They say that we should make full use of the night time to learn more. Actually the result is opposite to imagination. They feel very sleepy next day. Worse still, most of the knowledge they learn at night will be forgot very soon. Every one has his or her own biological clock. You should try to find the most effective time for you to study. Then study in the best time of you.
Maybe you have known some of these methods. But I think they are very important in your study and most of the people will neglect them. There is a saying I’d like to share with you :doing all the tiniest things is the biggest success!
My Hometown
My hometown also has another name-the hometown of lotus, because lotus is widely planted there. If you travel to my hometown in summer, you can easily smell the delicate fragrance of lotus flowers as well as its leaves even when you are in the downtown. You can also enjoy a really special meal of which all the courses contain some part of the lotus:tea made in the way of steeping lotus leaves in either boiling water or ice water,a kind of beverage made from the juice of lotus roots, cute balls made of both meat and lotus roots or completely lotus roots if you are a vegeterian...My mum is really good at making this kind of balls.Every time my father's business friends from other provinces come to Baoying, the first thing they want to do is to have a taste of the special balls made by my mum.
I think the most special local food of my hometown is Guihua Nuomi Ou(soory I really don't know how to translate it into English).Guihua means the flowers of laurel.Nuomi means polished glutinous rice and Ou means lotus roots. Its main cooking process is :first fill the long holes in lotus roots with polished glutinous rice, then sprinkle the honey of laurel flowers over the lotus roots and finally steam the lotus roots. As far as I know, this kind of snack is only available in my hometown as well as some areas nearby. That is to say if you want to have a taste of this kind of rare delicacy, just welcome to my hometown!
Three weeks ago when the new term started ,one of my seniors who is from the same hometown as mine flew back and brought with him some loaves of Guihua Nuomi Ou.To my great surprise and delight he gave me one as a present!I shared it among all my roommates and two of my be-frienders and they all liked it very much which made me feel very happy and proud. One of the be-frienders Shiyan commented that he had never seen this way of cooking lotus roots and the taste was a little bit like that of Zongzi(a pyramid-shaped dumpling made of glutinous rice wrapped in bamboo or reed leaves).I think it may because they both contain glutinous rice.
To tell the truth, when I was staying in my hometown,I wasn't able to discover its beauty.Once I am now far from it,however,I've come to realize its beauty, its people's warmth and what a deep influence it has made on me.Wish you all the best my hometown and those lovely people!

Happy Camp
In the morning we went to Mount Faber where we played several interesting games.I like the last game most which can be called as a Singing Comprtition. Two handsome seniors played the background music of some well-known pop songs while we sang the lyrics to the music. But at a certain point the seniors would stop and let us tell them the next line of lyrics. The one who could tell the lyrics without any mistake would win.Actually I just like the fantastic atmosphere:beautiful guitar accompaniment, romantic songs, happy laughters, refreshing wind brushing my face gently, green trees and pink flowers all around...Everything seemed so perfect and I wondered whether I was in real life or in a romantic Korean TV series.
Besides the singing game, what impressed me most was the amazingly clean and beautiful harbor of Singapore. On the top of the mountain,I could have a bird's-eye view of the nearby harbor:white chimneys standing high into the blue sky, colourful cargo ships plying back and forth in order, white seagulls flying round and round peacefully, little waves rolling on and on and making a pleasant sound...That scene was exactly like an oil painting drawn by a master.
In the evening we had our talent time. The group I was in put on a small drama about Chang'E and her husband Hou Yi.Every group's performance was so excellent that I firmly believe all of us had a good time that night.
In the end,I want to express my genuine thanks to my be-frienders even though they can't see my blog.As soon as I got to Singapore they picked me up at the airport although it was nearly mid-night.They took me on amenities tour in order to make me get familiar around. They led me during my medical check-up and showed me around NUS.They organized interesting camp activities to let us have fun.Although I am now in a totally new and strange country, their warm help and care make me feel less lonely and fit in quite well. So,THANK YOU ALL MY BE-FRIENDERS!
Thoughts of the leaves(YSN)
This is a line of a famous Chinese poem. I just translated it woodenly. I really like this line which shows the perceptual thought of the poet. Once he walked in sugarbush, he picked up a maple leaf. The fresh red color moved him and awoke a pleasant sensation. So he wrote such a line.
Maybe you wonder why I mentioned it. Several days ago, when I was waiting for my school bus, I noticed a kind of plant by accident. The leaves of this unknown plant really surprised me. They were in the shape of ellipse and became pointed at the bottom of both two sides. On the surface, they were no more special than other green leaves. But when I turned one of them over, I found that the other side was red! It was incredible that two of the extreme colors existed in such one small issue of nature. Then the line of the poem occurred to me. That moment I was moved just like the poet.
Maybe it is common for Singaporeans to see such plant. But it is totally different to me, a girl brought up in northern China, who used to see red maple leaves in autumn. They always bring me hope and make me more optimistic. I was happy because I would never say goodbye to lovely red leaves even in Singapore, where almost every leaf is green.
Moreover, it also woke up some of my precious memory about my hometown. Suddenly I wanted to pick up one. Perhaps I should post it to my friend who I missed much. But I stopped myself. Arranged by fate or decided by myself, I am already in Singapore, where I’ll spend at least 10 years. Whether I see the leaves or not, I will still miss the person I miss and also be the perceptual person what I used to be. After all, people shouldn’t always live in the shade of the past. When environment changes, mood should be changed. It is me who lead my own life.
Quietly, I breathe, feeling the ardour represented by the red leaves flowing into my body.
A quiz
I feel very sorry that my first mind is always to take the nearer one and I often do so. Only when my second mind comes and I remember what I should do, then I will choose the farther one. I know it’s not good and I am now trying to correct it, trying hard to make my second mind become the first one. Can you understand what I want to say? If not, just ask me!
I think about this because of a short message from my friend in China. She told me that Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiaobao once said China needs students who usually look up at the sky. What does looking up at the sky mean? You know in China we say one who gets his peoples’ hearts gets the world. “Sky” in China means the world. Premier Wen hopes we can be persons caring about the people, the country, the world. Maybe the country or the world is too big to us. We just begin with thinking for people around. And this is what I want to say finally.
I want to ask you a question here finally. When you brush your teeth every morning, have you ever thought of putting your head lower so that water won’t run away and spatter others?
Say Goodbye to Yesterday
Slippers Everywhere...
The first time I arrived in Singapore, I was shocked by the way people dress in here.
In China I never thought about people on street were all wearing slippers one day, but here things become so different that every people are wearing slippers on every possible occasions, even in some quite formal situations in my view, with a very natural expression.
The first day we arrived here, we were supposed to have a meeting in Ministry of Education. It really impressed me a lot that the officials here just meet us with a pair of slippers and a formal suit-dress at the same time. What's more, our local befrienders once invited us to East Coast Park, and when we began riding bikes around the park, I was shocked because our befrienders were still wearing the slippers!
Is it because slippers will be more comfortable to walk with? At least for me, I'm afraid that it is completely wrong because actually, I once tried wearing slippers while hanging out with my friends, which turned out to be such a disaster that I couldn't walk in a natural way in the following days, and the embarrassing walking posture lasted around 3 or 4 days. So what's on earth the reason? I'm quite curious about the mystery.
I still remember the culture crash we experienced this Christmas. We SM3 students from Northwestern Polytechnic University were invited to take part in a party held in a local befriender's home. What surprised us happened when we were required to take off our shoes before going into the house. That's quite a weired feeling to touch the flour with naked feet. This time even no slippers...
Seemingly it is a hard time for me to adjust to all the custom, but I think I will get used to it sooner or later.

Days in Singapore
But there are still some problems. In fact,I find myself full of despair every morning when I wake up.Then I take a quick shower, and hurry to catch the school bus.I even don't have time to have breakfast. When I stand before CENTRE LIBRARY,I try my best to persuade myself to forget the ideas about running away from here. But there still have many things cheerful, such as the lunch time . The food here is far more delicious than those in ETON HALL. I love the Indonesia barbecue, and the luksa!
what is the ideal educational system ?
I have studied in China for twelve years. And I had taken part in the college entrance examination which is the most important exam in china. After that I had studied in china′s university for about two months. Now I have received the education in Singapore and known many things about western countries′education. So I am always thinking about what is the advantages and disadvantages in Chinese and Singapore′s educational system? How to improve it?
China′s educational system has its own advantages and disadvantages. The advantages are that teachers always train students to win the best achievements in their school life. So with time students have very good consciousness of competition. When they finish school and attend jobs, they will take the good habit to their jobs. They will be very serious and hard-working. They try their best to be the distinguished clerk for the excellence. The disadvantages are that teachers pay more attention to the examination. They ignore the most important things that they should train them in individual ideas.
Singapore's examination system is good. It offers students with more opportunities and choices about their future. Students could choose what they to do , which could make them put all their passions and energies to what they love to do. What's more, students have many after-class activities which could mould their temperament and enlarge their horizon. This is very useful and helpful to their growth in body and psychology. Team spirits are encouraged from childhood. So when they attend jobs, they could easily get along well with workmates.
But it also has drawbacks. It gives students too much freedom. Some students are not self-control. Maybe they will waste their time on something bad. I think teachers should restrict students in some aspects properly.
So in my point of view, combine the western and eastern countries′s advantages will lead to a good system. But there is another thing which is very important. Different countries have different national conditions. So when we put the education system into practice, we should consider more.
A "Boss"
We had been divided into 12 groups(different from tutorial groups) and each group should perform a show in the party. There was only one week for preparation. We spent a whole afternoon discussing what we would perform. This idea was too unpractical and that idea had no innovation. Finally, I came up with a good idea. Why not just perform our daily life in a special way? I dressed the content a serious coat. I gave it a name that “Eton Hall News Broadcast”. It took 4 hours for me to work the drama script out. That’s really a big challenge for a green hand. However, it really hurt me when a guy in my group didn’t respect my work. He just showed me a boss look and acted like an auntie picking vegetables. How much I wanted to shout at him that “Please, do you know how to spell RESPECT? You think it easy, and then you do it! Don’t stand by and just pick the apples without cultivation!” But I didn’t. I told myself that it didn’t worth being angry with such guy.
Finally, our show gained a lot of acclaim, which gave me large fulfillment and swept away the unhappiness. Nevertheless, when I recall the thing, I still wonder why one could hurt others so easily and how he would survive the fierce society in the future. I wish that he could learn how to get along with others as soon as possible.
a new world
Good morning,Singapore
We now wake up in Singapore, busy studying, making new friends, experiencing all those foreign things, excited and curious about the new day.
I still remembered the day I first opened my QQ Zone, something like the Blogger.I didn't prepare to care it too much, because I didn't even keep a diary. But soon it became a special way to keep in touch with my friends as I could share my feelings . Yesterday I opened this Blogger , which would play the role as another QQ Zone and was just like a new world , a new world waiting for me to create .
We've said good bye to China but can we really put all the things down and forget ? China has been a dream but sometimes a dream is so sweet that we still can't forget after we wake up . All the relationship we built through the years seems to dying out slowly after we leave China , after we wake up in this new world . A dream will be forgdtten any way .
I am crossing the door to a new world from the old one .
Obey the rules
I read a piece of news last week, which said the government had done a survey recently. They put more police on some main roads such as the Orchard Road, the Vivo City to fine the people who littered around. At last, they had more than 80 bills while the number of bills was 30 at this time last year. It made a conclusion that people had less awareness about the environment. I don’t know why people litter around under such strict rules and such high fine. It’s just because they are lazy to throw it in a dustbin? But you know in Singapore it is quite easy to find a dustbin, so what we should do is just go towards it and throw the rubbish in. It is quite easy, isn’t it? Why don’t we walk a little longer and make the environment better? It’s only a few steps to you. The environment is like our home, so everyone should do our best to keep home clean and tidy.
When we have lessons in LT31, the professor told us he had received some emails from the drivers in which they explained there were so many SM2 and SM3 students crossed the road obeying the traffic rules. I felt very uncomfortable after hearing this, but this was true. When class was over, almost all the students were jay-walking to catch buses and made traffic there mass. We are abroad now, so what we do reflects the behavior we have in our motherland. We are representations of our great China so we should care about our behaviors. If we do something lack of quality, then people from other countries may think bad of China. But this is not the most important thing. What matters most is it is too dangerous to cross the road without using a zebra crossing or waiting for the green light on. In Singapore, speed of cars is very high. During we cross the road, we can easily be hit by a car because the drivers don’t have time to stop their cars in time under such a high speed. And because you don’t obey the rules, you should be in all responsibilities. You have to pay a lot to repairer the car, and use your own money to cure yourself. What’s worse, you may even lose your life! But if it is before a zebra crossing, drivers will stop to let you go first. Like dustbins, it is easy to find a zebra crossing or undergo in Singapore. Don’t be so lazy, please walk longer to cross the road in a safe way. We don’t want to go back to China just because a traffic accident isn’t it.? It’s so satirical.
We are studying abroad now. Who are the people care about us most in this world? Our parents. They don’t want us to have any accident, and we are the whole world in their eyes. So we are not study only for ourselves, also for our families. Be responsible to your own and your family. The best way to do it is obey the rules.

One Month’s Distance
Right this midnight a month ago, we landed on the Changi Airport. It was a dark night with thick clouds and lots of twinkle lights, which immediately caught my eye, and left a remarkable impression in my memory. But a month later, when I am sitting here, before my laptop in front of my desk in a common room at Eton Hall, typing my first blog and having a cup of tea from China, it appears that between the two nights, is not only one month. It has passed several centuries, enough from birth to death, and enough from death to rebirth.
With the advanced modern technology, you can travel around the earth by equator in one day, and you can land at the accurate place where you set off if you travel in a whole circle. But I am not travelling in a whole circle, nor am I travelling by equator. I am travelling all along my life, from the birth to death, and never can I travel from death to rebirth.
But is there anyone who can tell me how far I have travelled in a month?
No one, including myself.
I am acquainted with where I come from, but I haven’t even the slightest idea about where I am going to. Time flies without making even a venial noise, cause it has no wings. It simply wafts, as though it is aware of how busy we are, and kindly it does not want to disturb us.
We are all busy travelling, from birth to death. Time is travelling, too, but there is no such concept as birth or death concerning time. When time travelled a month, how far have we travelled? Is it merely the distance between China and Singapore? Is it just from the Yangzi River to Singapore River? Or is it from your heart to mine, the one I am missing? Or is one month the distance between you and me, someplace or something I am missing?
Once we dreamt we were dear together, but we waked up to find we were strangers to each other.
Once we supposed we were rooted together, but we came across the fact that our branches stretch opposite to each other.
Once we …
Once me…
Once …
Perhaps this is how far a month’s distance is.
Enjoy Learning English with Tutors
In class, we have fun learning with our tutors. And the tutors are very humorous and responsible. They not only relate to daily life, but world affairs when teaching learning skills, which makes lessons very lively and full of laughter.I always have an ambition to talk about my tutors because it is them who have produced such interesting lessons.
Mr Mehdi, who is our Monday tutor, speaks very authentic British English, which sounds so beautiful. He has got an lively mind and has a lot of thoughts to share with us. As a result, the material he plans to teach can not be finished, which, I believe, is common among all the tutors. I'm not complaining of course. It's just a teaching method I've never experienced before.
Another tutor who is very impressive is Mrs Yap who teaches us on Tursday. She is so humorous and so lovely that she keeps us laughing all the time. But that is not the only reason why she has left deep impression on me. She has actually spent a lot of time teaching us etiquette, which is how to be polite and nice to others. I really appreciate that.
The other tutors are also very nice. Ms Sonali always wears an attractive smile;Ms Esther Soo-Chee speaks very beautiful American English which is fascinating; Ms Leo tells us a lot about local Singaporeans' life.
I really take an interest in learning English now. I do not entertain myself with English movies or music, but enjoy learning English thanks to the tutors. Through listening and speaking, I enjoy myself in the world of English.
The difference in education system between Singapore and China
Having been staying in
The primary education is divided into two parts, foundation stage and orientation stage, which is almost the same in
These are what I've got from this week’s learning. Basically, I think the two kinds of systems are pretty good, though there are still some points which need improving, such as expanding students’ knowledge about society apart from textbooks etc.
Culture Shock in Singapore
I heard that, culture shock is mainly caused from the difference between two culture when some one go abroad. The new arrival seems fantastic and he will be pleased and excited by all of the new things encountered. But after a period of time ,the person may have some difficulties and troubles in daily life. There may be feelings of loneliness, sadness, and feeling homesick. This means the person is adapting to a new culture that is very different from the culture of origin.Step by step he will gain some understanding of the new culture.A new feeling of pleasure may be experienced.Next,he personally realizes that the culture has good and bad things to offer. He is being accepted in the new society. When he come back to his own country,a new environment should be adapted in return.Culture shock is not negative. As a process to be a global and comprehensive person, culture shock is necessary. If everything in the new place is just like home,no learning will come from being there.Am I all right?
I know if I want to be incorporated into a new world,I must get used to the culture, even if I try to speak with the local only to receive confusion;even if I hesitate in supermarket for necessary commodities but don't know what the English names mean; even if sometimes I have to force myself to wolf down all distasteful food applied by hostel just not to starve.
However, what shocked me most was the Christians here.A few days after our arriving in this foreign country,we were fetched with curiosity to have church by local friends. There ,we were deeply astonished by the environment .The pastor said so many things about the Lord Jesus, and we(technically, they) praied, sang songs, showed loyalism to the infinite."He is our forever lasting father--Jesus is a mighty God,he will be around with us if we follow his faith!--we are equal--and he would help us to avoid disasters, diseases if we always pray and repent!!--Let's pray together!!No matter whether you believe Christ---tonight,we will have blessings!Tonight,we all hold candles!Tonight God will come to us!---Close your eyes!Raise your hands!Listen to our souls! We should repent. We all offenders! He will forgive us !--Let's sing together!!O COME LET US ADORE HIM!O COME LET US ADORE HIM ! O COME LET US ADORE HIM! CHRIST THE LORD...HALILUYA!!"The pastor said so.I was really shocked by the atmosphere and the flourishing in church. As a freethinker,I couldn't accept this faith immediately. But I also bowed my head ,standed and made wishes as respect the whole night .In fact the values of Christ are saint as well, for example, the appeal for peace, love, and forgiving others even he is the murder having killed your family. This is Christ I saw in Singapore.Moved impressed,I experienced after all.
It's often the most challenging things that have the most benefit. From contract between the two country, I learnt to be more respectful and objective.Academical capabilities I am going to learn here will also have a significant impact on my future.Culture shock is not a fear for me because I always regard experiencing as treasures in my life. After all ,there are parents supporting me from the remote.Sometimes,I feel sort of homesick, but it does not so serious for I have new friends here .Since being far away from motherland,my hometown,my family,my prior friends and teachers,I do hope they can lead wonderful lives.I can hear the voice of home by the moonlight at night, and it tinges my every day with happy feeling.
Enjoy Myself
Is It Really?
I think it is unreasonable and unfair. In china different areas conduct their own college entrance examination so the test paper is different from each other. Some test papers are so easy that many students get a very high mark. While some are very difficult to get a high mark. What's more, the full mark is also different. Most of the test papers' full mark is 750 but jiangsu provice's is 480. I think it is difficult to make comparison. Yes, we can multiply our marks by 1.5625 then we can make comparison. Is it really unfair? No! That means if we lose one mark we will lose 1.5625 mark. Furthermore, I think the college extrance examination's marks just represent your previous level. Your present level will be reflected by your marks of your bridging course. That you got a high mark in the college entrance examination doesn't mean you can also do well in your bridging course and vice versa.
In my opinion, the basement of choosing course should be the mark of our bridging course. If two or more students' marks are same then the college entrance examination's mark will work. Now I am a little upset. I hope the information is not really.
English is so important in singapore
It was a funny thing happened to me on the second sunday I have been in singapore. That day, I walked to many unfamiliar places with my friends. After about several hours' walking, we lost our way successfully. Luckily, we had taken the EZ-links with us, so we got into a bus. On the bus, I asked the driver when could we get out in English. But the driver didn't understand what I say, so I gave up and just took a seat in the bus. And after several stops, another people got into the bus and asked a similiar question to the driver in chinese, and the driver answered him clearly in chinese, too. You know the driver was surely good at English. It was a very funny thing. And at that time I knew ,"my English is so poor and it is so important in singapore to speak English well."
There was another thing I wanted to share with you. It also was happened in the weekend when we was going shopping in IKEA. After paying, the shop assistant spoke some words to me in English, but I just didn't understand her. She reperted the same words for many times, at last, she smiled and explained with her movements. Oh,my god, she was just asked me if I wanted a plastic bag!!
After many things just like those, I really want to say, English is so important in singapore. So, let's try our best to learn english well and have a better communication with the people around.

On teaching and learning in a small class
Here ,we are divided into small groups .We 19 students form a class ,with 5 tutors' accompany .Everyone of us could have an opportunity, at least once in one period , to take an activity part in the class discussion ,and everyone's voice could be heard in class .We can speak out our thoughts and feelings ,no matter it is right or wrong ,and the tutors can give us a little comment. Thus this gives us all a feeling that we are the hosts of this class ,and this motivated us to practise English more in class .
And because the scale of our class is not big ,every tutor can pay attention to every student, they can know students very well , thus giving those who have not say a word in class a chance to practise .Moreover ,tutors can make full use of the time to use all kinds of methods they want to draw our attention to what he or she wants to convey to us ,also these knowledge will have a deeper impression on our minds .
Thanks to all these conveniences,we all enjoy it very much .
