The first time I arrived in Singapore, I was shocked by the way people dress in here.
In China I never thought about people on street were all wearing slippers one day, but here things become so different that every people are wearing slippers on every possible occasions, even in some quite formal situations in my view, with a very natural expression.
The first day we arrived here, we were supposed to have a meeting in Ministry of Education. It really impressed me a lot that the officials here just meet us with a pair of slippers and a formal suit-dress at the same time. What's more, our local befrienders once invited us to East Coast Park, and when we began riding bikes around the park, I was shocked because our befrienders were still wearing the slippers!
Is it because slippers will be more comfortable to walk with? At least for me, I'm afraid that it is completely wrong because actually, I once tried wearing slippers while hanging out with my friends, which turned out to be such a disaster that I couldn't walk in a natural way in the following days, and the embarrassing walking posture lasted around 3 or 4 days. So what's on earth the reason? I'm quite curious about the mystery.
I still remember the culture crash we experienced this Christmas. We SM3 students from Northwestern Polytechnic University were invited to take part in a party held in a local befriender's home. What surprised us happened when we were required to take off our shoes before going into the house. That's quite a weired feeling to touch the flour with naked feet. This time even no slippers...
Seemingly it is a hard time for me to adjust to all the custom, but I think I will get used to it sooner or later.
Interesting story! It has a clear structure with phenomenon first, question followed, then analysis with personal experiences. And I can find no mistakes.
ReplyDeleteInteresting. You have a special view of life.I heard that such kind of slipper is the national shoe of sg.Ha!What you heard and saw is culture shock in some way.
ReplyDeleteBut we can't wear slippers in class...wu~~~~
ReplyDeletei've never worn slippers before, and i'm not prepared to try 'cause i guess they would make my feet uncomfortable as i never try ......it's like a paradox
ReplyDeleteIt is surprising that you couldn't walk in a natural way in slippers! Why? Don't you wear slippers at your hometown even in summer? In Wuhan it is common to see slippers everywhere in summer......
ReplyDelete...Generally I have nenver done so...But in my hometown Xi'an, there are not so many people wearing slippers in summer as in Singapore as well.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy wear slippers ,it is convenient!Try to get used to it ,and then you will like it too!!
ReplyDeleteVisiting another country exposes you to a different way of doing things and this is a very interesting observation you have made. It is not only in Singapore where you will find people removing their shoes before entering a home. In fact, in most Asian homes this seems to be the practice. However, wearing sandals at relatively formal occasions seems not uncommon here. Again, this is an interesting observation.
