Lady First?

“Who presents your group’s result?”
“…Lady first!” “Gentlemen” in the group snickered.
After a long boring discussion without result, girls are always lucky enough to get the final “honor”.

Scaling up the tiny fact, actually a joke though, we can see many “lady first” matters around us.

When a company is deciding a staff reduction plan, “lady first” runs. Women employees have more chances to be first selected on the list, in the same situation as they have to stand out as the first with more shining qualities to grab a position vying with men. Why? “Women are busy looking for a Prince Charming in their blossom; next, they see their husbands as the core of their life; subsequently, they may have a baby, their most concentration is natrually displaced to this most precious part of their body… How can women concentrate on their job?” An employer recruiting new employees may respond in this way for explaining “Men have superiority to get the post.” in the ad.

When it comes to the domestic tasks, “lady first” keeps company. People take it for granted again that women are the first select, who are born to dedicate themselves to the chores, including child rearing, old parents caring and infinite house cleaning, which require much patience and energy. However, men only focus to their jobs without distraction because there is such a super woman behind looking after his home in a perfect order, mute and voluntary.
It’s true that the separation between males and females is becoming smaller and smaller, while these stereotypes in mindset are still inevitable. Women are in inferiority more or less. Even worse, few who have no status or support are still struggling in an abyss of suffering. Therefore, we never give up the hope to find a balance, which saves the women and further more benefits the society.

Of course, yet I guess every lady would feel fairly happy when there is a gentleman holds a door open for her, saying “Lady first” in a polite and sweet way. That’s what “lady first” is really about!

  1. Why do you think the stereotypes are still prevalent and that it's inevitable for people to continue to have those stereotypes?

  2. Ms. Esther, I think you get my point a little wrong.
In my passage I admit that the situation turns quite good and we are happy to see that. What I mean about the "inevitable" is the same as "Rome was not built in a day." Gender roles revolution is a process, not a simple shift when you click on the mouse then get everything done. We haven't reached the ideal destination but we wish it could happen. Even though it takes quite a long time, we are not supposed to give up. Maybe you think I’m a real greedy girl who is never content. But, please be aware of that we are the lucky ones who are the first to enjoy the benefit, yet there are still quite a lot fellows suffering. Can we just be satisfied with what lucky we have obtained, and blind to those unlucky ones? Of course not! We have to work harder to fulfill this dream. However, what bother me is that I’m still not clear how to offer my help.
That's why I reveal the facts which still exist in most parts of China and advocate opening our eyes. Maybe my words are not quite appropriate but it’s my effort which puny I can dedicate.

  3. Just because women are responsible both at home and at work dosn't mean they are less dedicated to jobs. How ridiculous it is to privilege male for employment! But I believe this bias is less and less popular now. We can totally be confident about female status.

  4. I really like your introduction to this blog. Glad you defended your stand the way you did. Actually, I was just asking a philosophical question about why people still have stereotypes. You got it right when you said it's because Rome was not built in a day. I don't quite know what you think my point was, but hope this clears up any doubts.

  5. Oh, stupid me!:P
Yes, you are right, Ms. Esther.
I should not stay on the surface. I need to deepen my thought and go further.:)
    Thank you very much!
