Forethoughts, do you have?

The first week after recess is a quite busy one for me. We will have a checkpoint this Saturday and I haven’t been well prepared for it, for I didn’t make full use of my holiday. Therefore, I have to spare my limited time of this week to work on C programming language and Calculus. Unfortunately, we have a lot of English homework to do meanwhile. For example, at the moment I am writing my blog, though I planned to do math exercises. Apart from the blog, we also have a summary (I haven’t yet known which essay the summary is for) and additional homework requiring us to compare two kinds of culture. What’s more, I have to edit my essay and hand in the second draft next week. How terrible! I don’t know how I can reduce myself to such a miserable situation!

Long ago, I had noticed that a lot of my local friends had forethoughts. Though Lin is just a second year university student now, she has begun to prepare her project for the graduation. To me or to Chinese students, it’s unimaginable. We may need to plan our study for one or two months in senior high school but we seldom have a study plan for over 2 years. Nevertheless, it seems fairly usual in NUS or, we can say, in Singapore. This difference results from the different education we received in the past years. It’s true that Singaporean students are not as good as Chinese students in mathematics and physics. They are also less diligent than us. But we are much weaker in skills and methods. We are not farsighted. At least for me it is true. We don’t have the habit of planning our future far earlier than it really comes. Some of us even don’t know how to plan.

Some may argue that if you plan everything well at such an early time, what will happen if your direction is unfortunately wrong? Some may think it better to change your plan according to your studies and the environment.

I am not saying that foresight is definitely needed. It depends on different people. But in my opinion, it’s quite useful. I think of it as a necessary element of success. I am short-sighted not only in sight but also in my life. I don’t like it. I want to change it.

  1. It is believed that fortune smiles at those who prepare well. It is also acknowledged that if you fail to plan, you plan to fail.
But I do not like to plan everything well, I want spare time, I want cosy life, carefree life...but they NEVER come...

  2. In my opinion, I think before we make a plan about our life, we should have a dream. If we don't have a dream, it will be very hard to make a plan. when we make a plan, we should make a general blurprint for a long time and make a detailed plan for a short time.

  3. Start from detailed plans! Lont-term plan is indeed hard to make, but when you're accustomed to plan everyday's life, eventually you'll be able to plan year's life.

  6. I am happy that you realize this point although it is a little late. Forethoughts and pre-plans are very important for a person. It can make your life easier and in order. The feelings that you can look at everything going on within your expections is very good. I enjoy it very much.

  7. Planning is a good idea. You must be sure of WHAT it is you are planning. For example, you are now in the Research Project, planning is a MUST. What to do first, second etc.. and DEADLINES. Once you postpone, then things will not fall into place. this will hinder progress. Start with short-term plans: next 2 week and work on them.
