Last week we learnt something about the Baby boomer, the Generation X and Generation Y. And in my fifth blog I just want to talk something about them by three people: my grandfather, my father and I.
Obviously, my grandfather is among the Baby boomers. But he was not living like others in the same group. My grandfather was born in a very poor family and all of the elders of the family were farmers. What was worse, my grandfather was the only child of that poor family and when he was born, my grandfather's father was already more than 50 years old and died just about several years later. It was a terrible thing in that age of chaos because it meant my grandfather didn't have the chance to get education and also had to work for the family very young. In addition, he also had to suffer from others' bad treatment. What story impressed me about him was that during the Cultural Revolution of China, he was forced put into the prison. And when he stepped into the house after released, my elder uncle just ran to my grandmother and cried, " Oh, mum, another beggar is coming". When my grandfather told the story to me, he was just laughing. But I surely knew what he felt at that time. However, my grandfather was a strong man in mind. He worked hard and lived better than before, even though still very poor. What I want to infer then is that my grandfather had 8 children, 5 sons and 3 daughters just in that poor situation, and brought them up healthily.
My father is Generation X but he also don't have much in common among that group, Generation X. Perhaps my father was influenced by the poor situation of the family, he stopped study after fifth grade and helped with the farming. What different from my grandfather was that my father joined the people who went into the city and worked in the factories together with my mom when I was about 6 years old. The citizens always looked down to the farmers who worked as workers in the city because they thought they didn't get high education and only could do hard work all by hand. But just at that situation, he worked hard and got the low paying to supply the family. He gave the chance for me and my brother to study in the city, and he tried a new way to give a better life to his family even though he got disease later.
I am Generation Y and I'm really glad to be in this group. I lived through my childhood in the village with my grandparents and moved to the city for study with my parents when I was at fifth grate. I experienced the hard time in life, the poor living situation, the low level education and so on. And also I was lucky to get the chance study in city . So I understood the real worthy things we should do in life. We should value the good life and try for our best life. What's more, my grandfather and my father teach me a lot of things from their own experiences. I should be hard-working just like them, and also I should challenge to life and never give up.

I agree~ Although there are so many people doubt whether our generation can inherit the responsibility to develop society, i still believe in us!
ReplyDeleteHi Cady this is one of the best blogs I read. Your grandfather, father and now you (and your brother) got it right. Education is important, and EQUALLY important is dignity, honesty and hard work. I do not know of people who have died because they worked. You have definitely learnt that all can achieve if they put their minds to it, just as you have, I know your grandparents and parents must be very proud of you.
