Frequently I feel grateful and content with my situation. Looking back and forth, we are fortunate to be generation y! But the fact is, many people don’t realize how lucky they really are.
Especially for us Chinese students, we were born when china was just on its right path of development both in politics and economy. I can’t remember those historical moments, but when I recall what was like before and what is now, there is definitely a dramatic change. The best part is that we can both experience a poor life and a rich one. That means we can lead a comfortable life while being acknowledged of importance of exertion, which not everyone is privileged with. For my own case, I witnessed my parents striving to earn a better living, as both of them were from rural areas. Thanks for their effort, we moved from a small rented room to a flat, then a larger and better one. The memory that all three of us stayed in one room, I doing homework, mother preparing for dinner and father watching news on a super small TV remained vivid in my mind. I’m convinced that life is fair. For my parents, since they’ve gone through hardships, they enjoy the present life very much now. What’s more, I’m endowed with an optimistic temperament.
I believe my experience is nor a unique one. Many parents of us are baby boomers. They are conscious of the significance of education and the direction of our development. Many of us may complain about the strictness of parents about our study. In my opinion, they have the world of right to monitor our education, and they’re supposed to. If they let us be, how could we have achieved such achievements? Of course, the achievements I’m talking about are not only academic, but also artistic, intellectual and so on. For a simple example, it is common that parents force or persuade children to learn drawing, chess, or various kinds of musical instruments. It might seem not fun for us. But still, from my own experience, developing an interest brings you a feeling of plenitude, which you’ll aspire to without one. Besides, a gift is training in intelligence, useful now and may be useful in future. More importantly, it’s a loyal friend and a beautiful memory kept since childhood.
Apart from the advantages of virtue and education, we are witness to a lot of big events, and able to enjoy both before and after the event. For instance, when I was 10 years old, a computer became part of my home. I appreciate the convenience and fun it brings to me, but I also enjoy out door activities and indulge in the beauty of nature. We welcomed the new millennium, witnessed the grand Peking 2008 Olympic Games and so on. Those experiences cannot add to our intelligence, but after all, the feeling of pride and gratitude is another form of fortune and wealth.
I am lucky that i was born in this generation. There is no war in my hometown. I have the chance to be educated and go abroad to study and so on. All these things are marvellous in my grandparents' eyes.
